What crawled up John's ass

And died?

Does it make sense to deify any comedian? No, of course not. And I get that his cult metaphor is surely hyperbole. But let's face it: Bill's comedy is NOT for everyone. It is, perhaps, an acquired taste for some, like scotch or non pee water beer. I have recommended his stand-up to people who later told me, "WTF? That was full of profanity and highly offensive. He's just too much." I sorta smile when I hear that because it must have struck a nerve. No shit he uses profanity and is intense! I still believe that his comedy tended towards misanthropy because deep down, he was an optimist who knew humans were capable of doing better. I'm biased because I characterize myself that way.

You get tired of bullshit: parents who won't make their children mind, assholes who lie to you, paying out the ass for everything, working like a dog for a fraction of a fraction of the pie. It wears on you. One excellent unintended consequence of getting involved in organic farming and gardening is that I watch less TV; there's not much time for it and the time I do have doesn't seem well-spent in front of fake-ass "reality" TV or an endless parade of commercials trying to make me want shit I don't need. I'm not a tee-totaler; I simply watch less and then choose stuff that doesn't make me want to stick my head in an oven.

I can't watch much "news" without wanting to crawl in a cave. It's nothing but child abuse, animal abuse, domestic violence, warfare, famine, gloom and doom, everything on earth will kill you, every person will murder you. Fuck that. You would be an agoraphobe in short order if you watched nothing but news all the time. And don't even get me started on celebrities who are famous for nothing or famous for debauchery. Warhol was right on the money.

As for John's hatred of libertarians: get over it. Those of us who don't fit within the normal fuckwit parameters of the political scale of left versus right aren't automatically stupid or morally depraved. There are a great many things I wouldn't participate in but if consenting adults do behind closed doors, it ain't my business. http://www.amazon.com/Aint-Nobodys-Business-You-Consensual/dp/192976717X Am I going to tell a cancer or AIDS patient not to use MJ? No. When someone is in pain and suffering, it seems particularly arrogant and evil to say, "No, no. Papa Government knows best." Or "Take a pill with the same ingredients so that Big Pharma can get even richer." And remember: not everyone of the libertarian flavor is a money grabbing capitalist. Some of us want to imagine a society where you don't work 60+ hours a week and still hop along from paycheck to paycheck while getting bent over by high taxes and CorporaPe America. Just sayin.

I can't read a comment like this and think that Bill Hicks wasn't onto something. The ideas about puppets, US of Advertising, and TV as a panacea are even more true now.

As I said in a previous post, religion is not the opiate of the people. Shit like consumerism and corporatism have become the opium. Dangle that carrot, make them think, "One day you too can be wealthy with champagne wishes and caviar dreams" so they don't dare question the system.

If Randy Pan the Goat Boy is enough to send your world spinning out of control, no, you probably shouldn't watch Hicks' comedy. Go hide in a padded room and suck your pacifier.
