Something that puzzles me is when a person who is not impacted by your day-to-day choices leaps in and wants to dictate to you how to live. Why? It's like getting rowdy because you decided to have pecans instead of walnuts or water with lime instead of water with lemon. Who the fuck cares? Why do I need to justify any of this to you?
It made me think about why we invest in such small dramas and why it seems that women fall into the trap of justifying themselves when criticized. I was having a discussion with a friend-- not even a close friend, but a casual friend-- and he seemed genuinely offended when I said, "Eventually, my goal is small-scale farming." You would have thought I said I wanted to club baby seals and worship Satan. He quickly and uninvitedly informed me that "the corporate definition of success is very important" and "women with ambition can't be happy outside an office." Uh, what?!? I feel like we are fucked no matter what we choose. If you marry into wealth, you're not a feminist (http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/06/1-percent-wives-are-helping-to-kill-feminism-and-make-the-war-on-women-possible/258431/); yet somehow if you are pissed off about CorporaPe America and you want distance from consumerism, you can't be a feminist. So what's left? When did feminism mean middle class corporate drone who can't go too high or too low on the income scale? Why do income and our masses of stuff define us anyway? Maybe I don't want to lean in. http://www.redlightpolitics.info/post/45668221201/capitalism-is-also-political Maybe I have decided that the notion (be it myth or not) of "having it all" is not what I want. Why do I need to engage with an almost stranger about where my long term goals are headed?
I dunno. Maybe these are not small dramas after all but instead reflect bigger problems and disparities? *low, rumbling growl* I'm going to chew on this a bit more. If I tell him to shove his white bread, yuppiefuck gated community up his Dockers and Polo wearing ass, then I become as judgmental as he is in telling me that agriculture is no place for a "brainy, ambitious woman." God, that makes my blood boil though.
It seems I continually return to Mötley Crüe:
