Well, the critics didn't like it . . .

Damn right!

Wow. Looks like the critical reviews are about 50/50 regarding TTDW. I enjoyed it. And here's why.

SPOILERS BELOW! You have been warned, my friends.
(Mightn't Thor 2 rather have been called "You have beeeeen warned?" No, it might not.

I have to agree with the critics on one major point: Loki makes the movie. It's not as profound as how Heath Ledger owns TDK; without him, I would have left the theater early and felt pissed off. TTDW has other characters that will keep you interested. Nevertheless, Loki steals the show every time. When I went to the advanced screening, Loki had everyone laughing out loud. This is more like Loki commingled with Hannibal Lecter, Mephistopheles, and Mercutio.

Odin seems like a hard-ass in this movie. Not exactly a complaint, just an observation.

We were all sad when Frigga gets the final farewell. The dude five seats down from me cried like a baby. He also cried when Loki was impaled.

I'm a little torn about the conclusion. Thor loves Jane and decides to go all Edward / Wallis Simpson to show it. But how long will that actually last? It seems like a contrived means of making another storyline in a super convenient way: Loki wants the throne, Thor doesn't, but oh, he must go back to Asgard and take on the responsibility anyway. Meh. Not so sure about that part.

Even though it was part of a trick, I was aroused when Loki referred to himself (FINALLY) as Loki of Jotunheim. Fuck yeah, dude. Own that shit!

The monster from Jotunheim was also a funny touch.

Of the villains, I felt like Algrim was more badass than Malekith. The make-up was cool and I think Christopher Eccleston is a great actor. But Algrim seems more powerful and destructive. Eccleston winds up playing second fiddle sorta like Destro in GI Joe. He seems to get pigeonholed into the role of archvillain's wingman. Malekith winds up in the same file with Whiplash from Iron Man 2: good enough for one movie but probably never to be seen again.

The GOTG tie-in was freaky. The Collector has been described by the filmmakers as an outer space Liberace. They weren't kidding. If that was their goal, they nailed it! Meanwhile, I'm waiting for Rocket Raccoon. I feel pretty confident that he will be a BAMF and not decked out in a kooky Liberace cape. Oy vey.

Worth your time? Yes, especially if you are a Hiddleston fan. I rank it above Iron Man 3, particularly since Malekith wasn't made into a stupid bait-and-switch joke. So I put it above IM3 but certainly below The Avengers. I'd say it's 3/5 stars in my book.
